We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
