Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation about The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
